Hi All

I've just been investigating getting some new plates made up for my Spit 1500. Since it is now somewhat more highly tuned than in its previous incarnation, I don't particularly want a large number plate getting in the way of the airflow to the rad.

I've seen several Spits with stick-on number plates across the front of the bonnet (e-type style) or applied along the spoiler, but my local spares shop tells me that it is no longer legal to supply this sort of number plate.

Since my registration is only 5 characters long, I wondered about getting a shorter plate made up but, aparently, this is illegal too!

So it looks like I'm going to have to get a nasty full-length plate sitting in the air-flow to my rad.

I wonder what e-type owners will do for replacement front number plates following a respray?

  I wanted one of these for my race car...I discovered that it is illegal for suppliers to sell you a stick-on number plate - but they *can* sell you a reflective vinyl sign that just happens to be the same size and shape as a number plate...

    Ahem... if these 'stick on' number plates are illegal, and you are running one on a class A car, then that would constitute an MOT failure, which makes your car illegal

      Well your average MOT tester doesn't seem able to pick out the bumber plates in quite obviously incorrect fonts, so don't see too much danger.

        I'd be suprised if it was even noticed - I've got stick on plates and it wasnt picked up on at a recent MOT
        
        mind you, the guy also missed that I havent managed to get the horn working yet........hmm......wonder if he mised anything important........

        My car has been through 8 MOTs with its stick on front plate - it would be a nightmare having to remove it as it I reckon it has been painted around (mind you I could be doing with a new bonnet anyway .......).
        
        I've also passed many many policemen who have checked out the car when passing but show no interest in the numberplate.
        
        So I would say, if you really want a stick on vinyl sign the same size as a number plate, go for it.

      ...OK, if you want to be pedantic, the regs actually say "Class A cars must have a current MOT certificate". Nothing about them actually being MOT-worthy during an event!
      
      From what I remember of the number plate discussions in the "legal issues" messageboard, no-one could actually tell whether stick-on plates were illegal or not. Anyway, you've seen the plates on my van...
