Hmm, tempted to volunteer the V8 for it, but would it be too embarrassing if I got beaten by a 6-pot? 
I'll probably be up for it anyway, just to find out what sort of bhp it'll be putting out.

It might have been done before, but if its feasible, perhaps it could be made available for everyone rather than for a competition - whilst using a rolling road can generally be quite expensive, and as such only used for tuning the car - people might be keen on running their car briefly (for a small fee?) just to get a few statistics to boast about, or to see if things are working as well as they expect. Obviously theres still the possibility of an article on what happens from a few different aspects.

This has been discussed before and the rolling road that was due to appear at Stafford last year was ONLY going to be allowed to do power runs as the mobile tuning guys were already booked.
I will warn you now about power runs... they are NOT for the faint hearted
your car will be run to within
a inch of it's redline to get the full power curve! Even now I shudder when the revs reach 7800 and keep going! 
A tuned four pot should exceed 130Bhp, a six pot should exceed 180Bhp, a sprint should top 200Bhp and the V8 ... well Jon Wolfes tops over 370Bhp... (these are all flywheel figures).
I would be very interested to see what the supercharged machines do.
I think the fee was in the order of &163;40 per run and it takes about 15 minutes.-

Does it have to be Triumphs only?
Would love to make some noise using the Chimaera on the rollers. I know what it's kicking out at the moment, really depends on wether I can get 'sorted' first.
Could be a good excuse to sort my life out and get our Spit back on the road.

For that I would expect that if you pays your money you can get your power run.... however, I do know that the 'standard' mobile rolling road set up has a maximum rating and I think it 400Bhp... not sure if that means you will break it if you are higher than that or whether it simply won't read any higher.

The last time I spoke to Andy, at Castle Combe, back in September
I believe the unit can't handle the power over 400 bhp
It is a mobile unit after all, and it's not chained to the floor in any way
Having said that, I did witness a Porsche and a V12 Jag on the unit and doing OK-

The rolling road will be at Stafford in July - and at the track day in April at Mallory.
By then it should be able to handle well over 400hp - the limit at present is the electronics. No damage is caused by more powerful cars, it just stops reading.
However, above 400hp then wheelslip can be an issue!
As an aside, power runs are not particularly arduous for the engine, as it is all over in a few seconds. Static tuning is a different issue as the car needs to sit at high revs and full throttle as the tweaks are made.
With power runs it is just a case of flooring the throttle with a relatively light backload on the rollers. The car owner can specify the max revs we go to - often we do the first run with a limit of say 5000 rpm, then if the power is still climbing at 5000 when we print the chart out, then we'll do another run to a slightly higher limit. It's up to the customer!

Should make an interesting article for the magazine, I'd be interested to see how my car stacks up, 5000 rpm sounds perfectly reasonable

I'll put my humble 1300 against it.... betcha I get more power per cc
It wont be the most powerful race engine (in the 1300s) but it'll give a good 'control' subject. Anyway the spitfire racers advantage is in its lightness and weight distibution, not out and out power.
I think a good 'competition' would be to pre-guess what figure you think you're going to get and see who can guess the closest.... like handicap Drag racing in a way
I bet Jon Wolfe will win on out and out power unless that herald Dragster turn up - but then that's not a triumph engine
(or was ever fitted to a triumph at the
factory - yes I know the V8 is a rover lump)

not interested in hp/cc otherwise I would bring a model aeroplane engine along SuperTigre 2,5cc 0.5bhp at 30,000 rpm, single cylinder 2stroke running 20%nitro, 60%methanol, 20% castor oil.
Also don't expect mine will be the most powerful or the most potent, hopefully just a good solid performer for a straightforward motor with the usual over the counter bits.
will be interested (disappointed?) to see the difference between flywheel and rearwheel figures...
perhaps plot a graph of cc vs power and see where each engine falls along the way, then relate to cc vs.power (and yes a race motor would give more per cc than a road motor, don't you think???)
finally come up with a weight for each vehicle and the anoraks would have material to argue over for years to come...
