Gutted Van...
Now you've got me thinking back...
When I was shunted up the back...
If I remember correctly I went through the other guys insurance but insisted on specialist repairer (in this case JY Classics) just explain what the
car is and they should understand. KY gave a quick quote (had to get it to them) and kept the car until approval came through job was done in a couple
of days and was back on the road.
When the car was written off...
The process was much the same but it took ages to get the settlement out of the insurer as they disputed the agreed value - FJ argued for me and I got
the full price (but three months later). Buy back option was 33% of the value if I remember correctly for a Cat C (repairs exceed value) - if yours is
a Cat D (repairs cost 60% of value) they'd want more (probably 66%?). Once it was declared a write off you need to take it back as you'll get charged
for storage otherwise.
Talk to them about the salvage costs so you know their policy - if you take the car back after it's declared a write off they should be more than happy
to let you buy it back as they won't need to collect it themselves. Be ready to collect it very quickly from the repairers though as after the write
off is declared the car becomes the property of the insurance company (that's why they give you money) and they could pick it up within days (or
hours!).
In any case - it was his fault so make sure you get a courtesy car from his insurers... I had one for three months!!
