I can move my wipers about a 5'' up the screen by hand. This also makes the other move but not quite as far. If this was play in the wheel box, should just
one move or does this point to a problem at the motor end? Any advice most welcome.
Also just updated & uploaded a few more pics on my vehicle profile if anyone's interested in having a look. Just cleaned up the engine bay and added a
few period extras since I bought it. 'Crossed flags' were already fitted on the bonnet for some strange reason. Biggest mistake tho' was fitting a
semi-sports back box, way too loud for something with no oomph!!
Cheers.

Andrew you may get some gain by remove wipers, disconnect motor from sprial rack and pull rack out , turn wheel box spindle 1/2 turn ,,, turn rack over
and re insert up the tube with some care the rack and w/box gears will run on a less worn part.
put sticky label on wheel box spline to check its position before /after
make sure all tube clamps on the wheel boxes are tight ( under the dash) ............Peter

when we re fitted our wheel boxes( when the body was off its easy to get to the w/boxes)
someone had made the link tube too short and it never did reach the pipe clamp on the n/s box
so had to make up a new piece of bundy all this with rotating the rack gave a 50% improvement , make sure the gland nut at the motor is tight
and doesnt move about too much in the motor gearbox then drive it when its sunny peter

Worn and/or loose wheel boxes is most likely cause. Also worth checking for play in the crankpin bush inside the motor gearbox. I found
mine very loose. I seem to recall the solution was to solder the bush into the crank arm, but that was a long time ago. If any play is
obvious at that point, it should also be clear what needs doing or replacing to correct it. The Herald wiper motor is a pretty common Lucas
type and used in a lot of other vehicles. The only component that IS likley to be different is the gearwheel in the gearbox, which had
different throws for different cars. Given the same rack and wheelboxes, different crank throws gave a different length of sweep across the
screen. The intended blade sweep is marked in number of degrees on the crankwheel (under all the grease!)
