Smoke through the breather. There I've said it again.
Big valve, Mk4 1300 spit engine with a '68 x 1360 exhaust manifold and strom 150 for a laugh. Fab oil pressure, excellent cylinder pressures, correct oil
levels and well timed.
Redex treated bores, tappets noisy rather than too quiet...valve guides seem ok.
running with rocker cover off...the smoke seems to be coming up each rod hole rather than one ...
Can it be that I need to put the extractor manifold on to make the smoke go away??
help!!

What is your crankcase breather arrangement?
Cheers,
Bill.

Bill:
I can see fumes/smoke coming out of the side of the petrol pump when hot. Also, the dipstick allows out splashes of oil.
I'm a bit dim sometimes..but is there a crankcase breather on a Mk4 Spit engine and where is it? Is it that large nut/tap with what looks like a
screw stuck in it on the side of the block?
At present the fumes from the rocker area go through a pipe attached to the rear of the pancake air filter on the single 150 carb, but the engine
prefers this NOT to be attached as it splutters when idling as, I guess, the motor is deprived of life giving oxygen...
If I clean up and attach the pair of SUs which came with the engine, I will need to source a pair of filters or an all in one filter unit so that I
can do the same as above.
I remain niggled with the thought that the original cast manifold from the earlier engine, (with the smaller valved head and different cam etc) is
stangling this engine, and that once I attach a big bore type exhaust (Extractor + Mk1 Vitesse stainless system) that life will be sweet.
What do you reckon?

Lloyd:
May I take it that you might have the answer to my need for filters/filter for my HS2s??

The pipe out the side of the rocker cover should feed all fumes from the non-combustion side of the engine back into the carburettor - the
large nut at the back-right side of the block is the coolant drain point. What's coming out of the rocker cover pipe when it's disconnected
from the filter housing? I would expect to see some fumes at least, copious quantities in fact by the time you see leakage elsewhere. Check
that there is no obstruction in this pipe causing pressure buildup. If this is clear then you would seem to have more serious issues. Possibly
badly worn valve guides, but I am more inclined towards problems with the rings, the compression test will have verified the compression rings
but the others could be stuck firmly in their grooves.
It is possible to have a leakdown test performed on the engine, but it's not an area I've explored,
Cheers,
Bill.

Thanks Bill.
I did pour about 50ml of redex down warm bores and left it there for an hour or so. On restarting there were copious fumes and smoke from
the exhaust as well as the rocker cover and petrol pump etc. This 'extra' smoke reduced eventually to the fast stream of smoke I get now
(as I did BEFORE the redex treatment). It could be very worn guides as you say. I might put my original small valve head on to this engine
for peace of mind.
At least I really will know if it is the rings then.
A real bore though.
