Hi Mike,
The clicking noise you refer to will be your starter solenoid - the small blak box of tricks which has a lead to it off the battery and another to the
starter motor. heck power supply at the both the starter and the battery terminal on the solenoid when the ignition key is turned I suspect your
solenoid has packed up - mine did and made this noise. A good way to test if your solenoid is at fault, rather than your starter motor is to take a
jump lead from the battery to the motor terminal. This wires out the solenoid. The good news is, solenoids cost under £15
As for useable bits, the gearbox would be a nice upgrade, if it is from a mk4 spit as these have syncro on all gears, so no scrunching 1st. If it is an
earlier mk3 spit it would still be handy to have a spare, I know my spare box came at the right time! The engine, if sound should be ok too, again
depending on the model will vary slightly from the 13/60. The mk3 spit has a wilder cam and so more power, whereas the mk4 has the herald-type cam and
a slightly heavier bottom end, but unless you tend to delight in taking trips up to 5500-6000 rpm, I doubt you will notice the difference! The
halfshafts could also be of use, but only if they are of shorter early type, and beware UJ's!!
All sorts of bits are interchangeable on our cars which is one of the handy things about being able to keep them on the road. Clutch/brake master
cylinders / suspension setups etc can all be transfered, again depending on the model of spit.
Hope this is of help to you,
Ben
