the clutch
Anything and everything Herald. Talk about anything from the first 948s to the last 13/60s.
Section : Clutch

I am driving automatic gearbox cars since ages. Over the last two months I had pain in my left foot but didn't go to the doctor hoping the pain would
disappear. Pain has disapeared since yesterday. Diagnosis: Herald clutch too heavy force needed. I was driving around a lot to get the car prepared for
German registration and then took her down to the South of France to my holiday home and driving around there daily for the last three weeks. Returned two
days ago using my automatic box saloon. needing no clutch operation.
Note: my left foot is 66 years old.
Are there different clutch plates on the market and I have got one needing excessive force?
Can anybody recommend a clutch plate needing lower force?

I suspect there's something wrong with the mechanism somewhere as Herald clutches are not that heavy. Check the pedal hasn't seized to the shaft, the
release arm hasn't seized, etc

I agree, a Herald clutch should not be heavy, I can drive all day with no trouble. One thing, though- I always thought my old Mini had a heavy
clutch, nothing wrong with it, I eventually figured it was down to the lack of legroom (I used to drive with the seat back down at about 45 degrees
and sit halfway up it). A clutch will feel heavier if you are pushing it down from an upright driving position rather than pushing it away from you
in a more relaxed position. Noticed this as well when I was a bus driver. Big blokes take note! A Mini was really too small for me which is one of
the many reasons I bought a Herald in the first place.

Thanks for the hints by two members so far. I have to add: The Herald I bought is a hybrid built on a Vitesse chassis, using the 1200 body and
a 13/60 engine. Could it be that I have got a Vitesse clutch which might be heavier?

I don't think that would be possible, though someone may know different! As far as I know the Vitesse used a larger cluch than the Herald
which certainly wouldn't fit the 13/60 flywheel. Unless of course the flywheel from the 6 would fit the 4 cylinder engine but I very much
doubt it, if this was the case it would be one of those widely known things you talk about in the pub!

Herald and Vitesse clutches are completely different. To fit a Vitesse clutch to a Herald, you'd need the Vitesse flywheel and gearbox
(or at least the VItesse input shaft) so that is NOT something that could have been "in error" by mixing and matching parts. Nor is it
at all likely that someone would have deliberately chosen to do this. IF (and I can't think of any real need for this) an upgraded
clutch was wanted, the easier route to go down would be a Spitfire 1500 flywheel and clutch or upgraded 1300 Spitfire components.

Just noticed the time that message was posted. Ring any bells?
