I recently had the dreaded loss of hydraulic fluid from the master cylinder. So I ordered new seal kits for both master and slave cylinders and got stuck
into the job. All relatively straightforward so far, then. whilst repairing the master cylinder, I noticed that there was a spare seal in the kit! I
checked the Workshop Manual and Spares List and, sure enough they both show a secondary seal in a groove near the outer end of the piston. The problem is
........my piston does not have a groove! On further checking I note that the similar piston in the brake master cylinder does not have a seal in this
position. So, what's going on here? Is tne manual wrong or perhaps I have a brake cylinder piston fitted into a clutch cylinder! Any ideas?

The additional seal was deleted from the master cylinder in the early 1960s. The current British made Lucas/Girling rebuild kit does not include this
seal, hwever the Indian made TVS Girling kit does. Better to have spare seals than not enough....
Cheers,
Bill.

Bill,
Many thanks for putting my mind at rest. Perhaps I'll put the spare seal on ebay....you never know.
