My speedo doesn't work at all. Nothing.
The guy at the garage who used to have a Vitesse said it would probably be the speedo cable that needs replacing. And I think when I had a look that
neither of the circled wires were plugged in.
The gold one is a push button that I presume is for reset and the silver one must be the speedo cable. It has a square thing inside that rotates, except
that it doesn't rotate (when going along). Are they plugged into the correct holes?
I think I read in another post that the other end of the cable plugs into the gearbox. I'm borrowing a pair of axle stands tonight to have a poke
about...
Any tips much appreciated!

Yes, the inner square part of the speedo cable should rotate as you move the car (in gear). If it doesn't then either it's not connected at the other
end where it attaches to the gearbox or the cable is broken internally and needs replacing.

If you undo the cable at the dashboard end and pull the inner cable it should come out in one piece and you can tell because there should be a
square end at both ends of the cable. If the cable is still in one piece then check the cable is properly attached at the gearbox end, if it isn't
screwed in completely it can prevent the cable from engaging.
Another posibility, although less likely, is the drive at the gearbox has broken.
Finally, you don't need to get under the car to check the gearbox end as it can be reached easily from inside the car by removing the gearbox cover
which is held in place by about 10 screws.

Thanks for the replies guys.
This morning went to sports car supplies (Gateshead) and got a new speedo cable and after quite a bit of work to get the old one off the gear
box (awkward angle + very tight) found that the square bit had sheared off the wire (gear box end).
Having picked that out with pliers and installed the new cable, it all worked fine!
Very satisfactory!
Thanks again for all your help.
