Coil fittings were of two general types. Earlier ones had a screw thread in the neck of the coil. This required a sleeve like nut placed over the HT
lead, pressing against a split brass washer secured over a bare bit of the lead core/wire. While this was fitted to earlier Heralds, I would not expect
to find one on a 13/60.
All later Lucas coils have a push fitting like the ones in the distributor cap. There should be a sort of tall thin metal cap in the neck of the coil,
secured at the bottom by a screw. There should be a metal fitting crimped to the end of the HT lead which pushes into the cap in the coil neck. The
metal fitting on the lead (of the same type as those in the distributor cap) can be sprung slightly wider open (twist a screwdriver in the gap) or
closed up slightly (with a pair of pliers) to be a secure fit into the coil neck. I'm pretty sure that this type of fitting is standard on most modern
coils, so an Intermotor or Bosch coil would do just as well as a Lucas one, as would HT leads from any maker. (You do need to make sure you have a
bog-standard 12v coil, not one intended for use with a ballast resisitor.
You can buy the lead fittings separately and crimp them to the cable, or rob a fitting off an old lead, but it may be easier and quicker to buy a new
lead or set of leads.

Thanks for your advice. I couldn't see either a tall metal cap, the metal crimp fitting from the old lead or a thread inside the hole in the coil
but I shall have another look tonight, now that I know what to look for. If I still can't fit the new HT lead to the old coil then I guess it
wouldn't hurt to fit a new coil. This is probably a stupid question but I am very new to Triumphs; according to a couple of Triumph suppliers'
websites, the part number for the coil seems to be GCL110. On the Moss website they have coils with the same part number but listed for minis and
MGBs. Will these be the same? I would prefer to buy from Moss because I can call into their shop in Bristol instead of waiting for delivery from
another supplier (they seem to be a lot cheaper on this part as well?). Thanks for your help.

The Lucas type of coil fitted to the Herald etc was fitted to a HUGE range of British cars. As long as it is the right size, has the same HT
lead fixing, and is for use WITHOUT a ballast resistor,it will suit your Herald fine, whether intended for Spitfire, MGB, Morris Marina or
Sherpa van etc....
