Your windows will go down because gravity is doing the job for you. The window regulator (if its the same as a spitfire) has a small plastic wheel that runs in a channel at the bottom of the window glass. This can easily come out if you lower your windows too much and the 'stop' mechanism is misaligned or worn. You can remove the stop mechaism (two small screws) and check the felt 'stopper' I turned mine around to get extra life out of it and it works a treat now. It's a bit filldely to keep te window in it's runners and feed it back into the regulator channel though but it's a 10 minute job when you know what you're doing.
The door sticking is undobtedly the lock / latch mechanism. There are three places you can adjust it. Firstly the 'wire' that acts upon the latch from the latch handle inside the door, then theres the lock itself and finally the stricker plate. They need to be pretty well aligned to prevent them sticking.
Shouldn't be too much hassle - just Sunday afternoon's fiddle, but a sticking door is an MOT fail if my memory serves me correctly... so you should sort it out.

The doors on my spit were certainly tested during its MOT. Hadn't realised they were until that point. The passenger door has never really opened from the outside... along comes Mr MOT man... open, close, open, close... I breathed a sigh of relief and the thing's never worked again since! At least it did it when it mattered!

I think it's to make sure that they won't fly open while you are driving and also that you can easily get out if you're involved in an accident (and you may need to get out quickly).

The Herald winder mechanism is quite different to the Spitfire, so they do not share the same problems. There are a few regular failure modes for the
window winder. Most common is where the runner comes off the bottom of the glass, then glass then slips behind this and drops down inside the door,
irrespective of the winder position. The other common failure is wear in the winder gears, the sensible option is replacement of the mechanism, no
shortage of good secondhand ones. There are two arms whcih locate the mechanism to the runner at the bottom of the glass. These are retained by two
circular clips about the size of a ten pence piece with a bulged retainer in the centre. If these are missing then it is possible that the glass can
disconnect complete with it's runner, but these don't come off of their own accord, it only happens because someone didn't replace them after working
on the door.
For the door lock adjustment, with the trim panel removed, loosen the 3 screws which hold the interior handle mechanism to the door. Move the assembly slightly rearwards so that the actuating arm applies more movement at the lock end and the lock should work properly,

thanks folks, you were right about a Sunday "Fiddle". i duly waited until Sunday (nothing to do with dad visiting then!) and we then explored the window winder (obviously not wiper - damn spelling!) and a rivet had sheared off so that it was not driving the regulator? i am told by dad, source of all info.... that i am missing a spring to counterbalance the window winding movement. not sure if this is correct and had a look in the rimmer catalogue, no mention of spring on the gear ratchet thing.
the door catch when removed and inspected was rather wobbly and dad suggested that braising a loosened rivet plus slightly bending a leg bit should ensure that more movement would be achieved - tried the adjustment on the handle end to no avail. however the tightening of the rivet did the trick. it gives faith when a repair works and encourages more investigation and tinkering to hopefully fix the little quirks of the car. anyhow phoned Mr MOT and all booked in for tomorrow - just hope door holds out that long and it isn't only teasing me.
anyone able to confirm if i should have a spring at the gear area of the window winder - not the one to push the enscutcheon thingy onto the handle (i have that one)
