Anything and everything Herald. Talk about anything from the first 948s to the last 13/60s.

..... I still want own a Triumph Herald Convertible.
I've been doing as much research as I can, and this is what I know already:
I can't afford a Vitesse.
I prefer the looks of the 1200.
I would prefer the power of the 13/60 (or just another engine!), I'm not fussy about what powers it really, as long as it looks like a Herald.
I am not particularly mechanically minded - I used to fart about with my old Ford Escort a few years ago, and give me some tool and a Haynes manual, I'll
have a go, but start talking valve timings and gaskets and I go all blurry.
I want a car that uses petrol I can buy from a garage!!!!
I want something that will be admired lovingly whilst it sits in my garage, then to be taken out for little jaunts to the coast, camping and up and down
the odd motorway.
If I could find something powerful enough/reliable enough to get myself and the wife to the Dordogne next yea, that would be perfect.
I have about &163;1800 to spend (full stop, no more, I need something on the road for that)
If anyone can offer any advice for me I would be massively grateful. I've done the first thing I was recommended (join the TSSC!!!), so I'm a keen
student.
I need to know the basics, should I buy a 1200 or a 13/60? What's good/bad about them, what should I expect to pay, etc.
I've been scouring small ads, ebay, autotrader, etc for the last couple of months but I'm not sure really what I should be looking for.
Additionally, If anyone has one to sell, I am also interested (money's waiting).
Many thanks in advance
Paul
P.S. I live in Leeds

Paul - you mad fool you
I agree with all you're saying - I like the look of the 1200 best but I'd want to have a 1500 in the front (from a spitfire), tag on the back a 1500
gearbox and Overdrive - luvverly
&163;1800 should get you a fine example with a few known issues - but nothing serious. I'd recommend going for a good chassis and tub over
mechanicles - as the tub/chassis is a lot more difficult to fix - esp rust
I'd also advise you get intouch with your Area Organiser - details in the Courier. Then you can meet up with triumph owners and find yourself an
'expert' to help you look over any potential cars.
As for ebay, treat it like any other advert - don't bid on anything you haven't looked at in the flesh.
Good luck and Happy Hunting.

Paul: Don't dispare I also like the 1200. Thats why I bought one. Its my first Brittish car and so far quite easy to work on. As allways buy the
best one you can afford. Don't fall in love with the first one you see. E-Mail me direct and I will send you a humorious but true advertising
wording. Example Barn Fresh=Needs everything. Good Luck and now help me find a Estate Wagon. Bill

Hi Paul,
I would suggest a 1200 convertible as a good starting point, not least because they are generally cheaper. The 1200 also has a (to my eye) nicer
interior with an inarguably better quality dashboard.
As a daily driver, I would avoid cars built before mid 1962, they will have a commission number of GA80000 or lower. The later cars had a redesigned
chassis which, as well as being a much stronger design, will allow fitting of overdrive.
While I've travelled quite extensively in1200 powered Heralds (including a 1400 mile stint through Northern Europe), I can understand your preference
for a 1300. The 13/60 engine comes in two flavours, the early one prefixed GE is an excellent unit. The later GK prefixed engine is, quite frankly, a
bit of a let down, being reluctant to rev and more prone to bearing failure due to it's bigger crank. I wouldn't let this deter me from buying a car so
equipped, but it would be fitted with a better replacement as soon as that engine needed a major overhaul.
While you should be able to pick up a reasonably tidy convertible for your &163;1800, beware the tarted up dogs with patchwork floors and
wheelarches full of filler. Bodywork is the most important concern, anything mechanical is ultimately a nuts and bolts matter. Run your hands around
the arches and feel for a crisp edge where the inner wing meets the arch. Anything too thick is likely to be full of filler - treat the rest of the car
with suspicion. While the panel alignment on these cars was often poor even when new, serious misalignment of the bonnet and doors is a sign that the
car's not been reassembled properly.
Get in touch with your local area and pick the brains of other members. They may know which cars for sale locally are worth bothering with, and they
will also advise on the reputable (and less reputable) traders in your area.
Cheers,
Bill.

Just a note, your local area holds meetings on the second tuesday of each month in Birstall. The next one will be a week on Tuesday. I know that
several local members own and run various flavours of Herald so call in and have a word. I might even be there myself (although I know nothing about
Heralds that isn't also common to the Spitfire!)
Here's the link to the West Yorkshire area info on this site:

Hi Paul and welcome aboard.
Until recently I was in just the same position as you and I have found the other members in the West Yorks area to be absolutely brilliant. They helped
me out prior to purchasing my 13/60 convertible, and have helped me to solve all the little issues that have arisen since.
I urge you to go along to an area meeting. Second Tuesday of every month in the Black Bull at Birstall, near Batley. I usually tuen up between 8 and
830, and there are always some people there already. Might see you on Tuesday 14th?
Cheers, Mike
