Anything and everything Herald. Talk about anything from the first 948s to the last 13/60s.
I have just completed the full strip down of a Triumph Herald 1200 Saloon and am now embarking on the restoration. Due to the extensive body tub corrosion
I have been thinking about converting the car to a Convertible (not Tristam). Has anyone undertaken a similar project and is able to give me any advice
regarding interchangeability of parts.

Hi Graham
I am about to embark upon the purchase of a car which was a saloon converted using a donor convertible bodytub back in 1993.
I sent an e-mail through to the club on Monday asking if this type of conversion results in a safe, solid car. No reply back from them yet!!
If I buy the car I am more than happy to pass the details of the bloke who did the conversion (He was the last owner less one).
If you are living in London / Surrey area you will also be more than welcome to examine the car if I end up buying it.
Regards
Andrew

Guys
The conversion is not too complicated. The herald is designed with a bolt on roof, and is not strictly considered as "Structural". The Herald
Coupe and Convertible use the same rear deck panels, and are therefore the easiest to convert from one to the other and back. Saloons have
wider seat accomodation in the rear (width reduced on a Convertible for the hood frame to fold within the body). The most difficult bit will be
aquiring all the correct trim details. the door glass is different to suit the hood on a Convertible over a saloon, demisting vents with
poppers for the tonneau etc...
I am currently breaking a written off and rusty 13/60 1971 Convertible for parts for a Midge I am building, and all trim parts except for the
hood frame and rear seat are free to a deserving home.

The Herald Coupe and Convertible categorically DO NOT share the same panelwork in the rear deck area - they are totally dissimilar. The
Coupe roof is approximately 8 inches shorter than the convertible roof. The Coupe does not have any of the additional structure to
accomodate the hood mechanism of the convertible. The easiest starting point for a Convertible conversion would be a Saloon bodyshell, you
would nevertheless still need the deck section and hood well assemblies from an original convertible to do the job properly.
Also worth mentioning, the Coupe rear seat is another unique item which was available only as an option. The squab is rectangular in the
case of the Coupe, while the Convertible squab is tapered at the sides from front to back.
Cheers,
Bill Davies.

Hi Graham
I purchased the car and will pick it up next weekend. So if you are keen to contact the bloke who converted it (he was a mechanic by trade) or take
a look at mine please let me know.
I have also received a reply from the club regarding what to look for on a converted car. A point raised was the additional door "anti-burst"
catches below the main latches. These are unobtainable as new parts and are not easily found secondhand - they are present only on convertibles not
on saloons and are often missing on converted cars. So if you are using a convertible donor car make sure you take the fittings off the
convertibles doors.

Andrew

Hi All,
Thanks for the interest in my project. It seems as if there may be more to it that I at first anticipated - however have not been totally disheartened.
Would be interested, Lloyd, to know the extent of the rust on your donor car and may be interested in your body trim bits if you are not too far away.
I already have a convertible roof frame. Would be pleased to hear from you - I'm at graham.egleton@ntlworld.com.
Thanks also Bill for your input - may contact you again through your web address if that's O.K.
