First response is "screw it up tighter", perhaps using a mole wrench to give a bit more of a tweak. Don't overdo it though!
If that doesn't work, you can buy new dampers, though I'd tend to replace them in pairs so you get the same enrichment in both carbs when accelerating.
Other possibilities would include putting some PTFE tape round the threads when fitting the damper (sold for sealing pipe threads for plumbing etc).
Some "goo" like gasket sealant (Blue Hylomar for preference!) might help prevent the damper working loose, as might fitting an O ring under the head of the damper cap. (Don't think you could easily get a shakeproof washer in that size, and thin enough not to affect the dashpot action).
As a last resort something like Loctite thread sealant WOULD stop it, but you'd need to be sure you could get a good grip on the cap so you CAN remove it when YOU want to (when topping up dashpots etc).

Just an idea, I like the idea of an "o" ring, but something else that's possibly worth a try. Take a longish, wide, rubber band (The beauty of this idea is you might just have one to hand). Tie 2 knots in it, close to the ends. What I'm thinking of is 2 loops, to fit reasonably tight over the tops of the dampers, with the remainder of the band, between the two damper tops, also under tension which may just stop them unscrewing. That is if the engine heat doesn't melt it... My guess it it won't take much to stop them unscrewing.-

cheers guys, the car has dash pot covers on the the su's which i thought might be causing the problem but it only occurs on one of the dampers i think worn threads, there is an o ring on the damper already, i will have a try with the plummers tape I have some from fitting a bathroom and put an elastic band in the glove compartment incase it doesn't work.
Incidentally my car found a beautiful spot to breakdown, even had a conveniant layby, so much so i could help but take a photo to remind me not to forgett to put fuel in again see below.

I had this problem years ago on a car with a crack in the dashpot and always blamed it on that. Now I wish I'd tried swapping them over like you have to see what happens.
You could try changing the fibre washer - they probably work better when they are new and not all oily and smoothed off. More friction here means less likely to rattle loose.
If you are fortunate enought to have a rubber o-ring the right size that will seal it will also stop the damper rattling loose.
New dampers are only a fiver or so each from Burlen Fuel Systems and washers are 30p (according to my 1997 catalogue).

More important lesson perhaps is always to turn the reserve tap back to main after you fill up with fuel again. That way you have the reserve when you need it!-

Hi Chris
I only realised I had a manual reserve leaver/tap when it was too late..... B@@er. I am still quite new to owning triumphs so something&8217;s that seem obvious to experienced owners are quite alien to me.
My wife pointed out, when she brought me some petrol, that the lesson to learn was not to drive around with so little petrol in the car apparently she tells me this regularly&8230;
Am I right in thinking it that when i fill up I turn the tap to reserve and then back to main once I have put fuel in? I didn&8217;t do this when I put fuel in after I ran out&194;&8230;..
Can the tap be turned to reserve now to fill it with the tank contents? And then turned back to main will it have the same effect?

The difference between Reserve and Main is simply the position of the tube inside the tank (see attached). Try to use Main to prevent any crud at the bottom of your tank being taken up and clogging your fuel system.

Thanks for the picture too, based on this infromation i will not be leaving it on reserve anymore! Sadly i think i dragged the crud through the fuel line as the car spluttered for the first few miles but them as ok when i got on to the main road an opened her up.

Yes that is correct.

The reserve and main are not two separate tanks, the reserve just gives you access to a little more petrol in the very bottom of the tank, ie as soon as you fill up you don't have to worry about filling reserve.
The biggest mistake people make is forgetting to move the lever back to main supply and then run out of petrol in the mistaken smug belief you've got a few miles to go, I should know, it's happened to me twice! It's also bad practice to let it run onto reserve as any silt etc in the bottom of the tank is likely to get sucked up into the carb and it then takes more than a bit of petrol to get going again!
