Im finally getting round to fitting a 4/2/1 manifold of a mk2 spitfire onto my 1200 herald
just not sure which carbs would be best 1 1/2 or
1 1/4 Su's .
The car has no other modifications to engine and im tottaly new to this , "oh thats what an engine , looks like "Lark
What would be the easiest to get up and running , for a total novice .
cheers
p.s Have a great christmas everyone
Anybody else out there ,Praying they get Kylie for xmas, (LOL)

Hi Iain,
I think it will depend on what your plans for the engine are. I have a 13/60 (so obviously slightly bigger engine to start with) and I put a tubular
manifold on that, and put 1.5" SU's on it, but I plan to tune mine further; fast road cam and either mk4 spit or stage 2 head. To be honest I havent
noticed that much improvement in power with my current standard head and cam, just a drastic reduction in fuel economy! (must sort that!)I think i'm
right in saying that some racers use the standard 1 1/4's on cars that are producing around the 100bhp mark, so I think they should be fine!

Hi Iain,
For a total novice I would suggest sticking with the standard Solex carburettor, but I guess you're past that point now. The original twin carb
manifold will only accept the HS2 (1.25") SU's. There are 1300/1500 manifolds in HS2 and HS4 flavours, but neither of these will mate up to the 1147
engine - that engine has 4 inlet ports, the 1300 and 1500 have 4 ports.
I'm sure you're already aware that the benefits of twin carbs are severely limited without modifications to the engine itself. The factory kit included
skimming the head to raise the compression ratio and a different cam. Nevertheless it shoud run reliably. You will need advice on what needles to fit
in the carbs, but I'm really not experienced enough in that area to advise - sorry.
Cheers,
Bill.

Good point Bill, forgot there would be no manifold available to suit 1.5's! I can say from experience though that they make very little difference
to performance on their own, only letting it rev a bit higher,- after all the cam/head/inlet/exhaust would all have been designed to work
efficiently together as standard.
