Air box

Just playing around at the moment with the worn standard single stromberg on my 13/60, which is on its way out and will be replaced by sum nice HS4'S off a spit soon. Yesterday I decided to experiment by taking the airbox off and covering the inlet of the carb up with sum wire mesh- what an iduction noise! I love it! It sounds faster even if it isnt! but thats the thing it does seem faster to 60, so I timed it, 16.5 secs instead of 17.7. Can't understand why this would make such a difference, but also, the top speed has dropped by about 3-5mph, accelerating up to 75 fine, then taking an age to get to 80. Where abouts in the rev range have I lost/gained marginal amounts of power?

Thanks, Ben, White 68 13/60 conv
