Hi, Does anyone have any ideas why my amp meter fitted to my 1964 1200 estate (which has been converted to alternator) always reads 0, it has never read
properly since I bought the car two years ago. My oil pressure and water temperture gauges all read correctly. The only thing the amp meter does is show a
- reading when the lights are switched on (engine off) and occasionly reads a slight charge when first started up before soon returning to 0 again. Thanks

That sounds like what it is supposed to read. It measures current flowing in or out of the battery.
So when the engine is off and you switch electrics on you will get a reading. When the engine is running it will charge the battery initially to
replace the energy taken out by starting, then it will read 0 because the electrics are all powered by the alternator, not the battery.
If the alternator stops working it will tell you, because you will see a continuous drain from the battery. If the battery is low when you start the
car it will tell you, because you will see a greater charge going in once it is started.
