POLARITY PROBLEM........I have been rebuilding a Triumph based Spartan, and started with bodywork and chassis/brakes etc, but I need to check the correct
polarity of the car before going further.
The Engine is a 13/60 Herald engine, and a dynamo is fitted.
Is there any way to be sure of the polarity required?
I think it is a positive earth, but as the vehicle arrived without a battery and with unmarked terminals, I would like to be sure. Can you help me
please?

The polarity can be whatever you want since apart from the coil (which can be reversed to suit) and the dynamo (which can be repolarised anyway) there
is nothing polarity sensitive about the engine electrics. Going for negative earth gives you a better choice of anything else electric you might want
to fit egg. rev counter, radio , electronic ignition etc.
If your coil is marked + and - on the LT terminals and the - side is connected to the distributor, then you are -ve earth and vice versa. If the coil
is marked CB and SW it's probably from a +ve earth setup but only if CB is connected to the distributor- if it's the other way round someone has
probably been there before you and converted to -ve earth anyway.
There's plenty of info around about polarity conversion, fitting alternators etc if you ask here or try the Herald egroup on Yahoo.
Cheers
