Hi, I have just bought a body fitting kit for my 13/60 and am a bit confused.
My manuals are not specific enough. The problem is I can work out where most bolts etc go but my kit contains 14 rubber washer, numerous metal washers but
2 (die cast) C washers. These 2 washers are around 6mm thick and I can only think that their position must be critical. Can anyone help please. I dont want
to have to start rearranging everything at a later date because I cant achieve the proper alignments.
Thanks
Ivan

Hi Ivan,
The C washers are body spacers. The original construction of the Herald allowed for a great deal of adjustment in alignments. Assuming ideal
conditions, there would be nothing except a rubber washer between the body and chassis at any of the mounting points. Ideal conditions being rare,
spacing washers were inserted as required to fill the gaps where they were a little wider than they should be. The original spacers were produced in
many different thicknesses, I have seen them on some cars upto 0.75" thick!
Some amateur restorers use multiple rubber pads to achieve the same result, but this is never satisfactory. As the bolts are tightened, the pads should
be compressed evenly, doubling the thickness of rubber allows double the compression, so the relative alignments will move as the body mounting bolts
are tightened.
You may be lucky and not require the C washers provided in the kit. In the real world you are more likely to require more than the pair supplied!
Cheers,
Bill.

Thanks a lot Bill. That was very helpful.
I take it that I fit the bulhead securely and just line everything else up from there.
Sounds easy???????
