Can anyone tell me the meaning of the two crossed flags on the rear wings of convertibles, I understand they represent the letters S and V, but for what
reason.
Cheers

The flags were originally found on the Standard Vanguard series III Vignale. The letters stand for "Standard Vignale". Their relevance to the Herald is
a little tenuous, but they look good!

Bill.

What models were these flags put on and when did they stop fitting them? My car is a 71 13/60 and would appear to have original rear wings with no
sign of flags ever being present

They were introduced in 1960, firstly on the 948 Coupe and then on all 948 & 1200 Convertibles. They were continued on the early 13/60
Convertibles, but there is something of a grey area regarding when they were deleted. Most sources suggest they were fitted to all but very
late 13/60 Convertibles, but I once owned a 1968 G registered 13/60 Convertible which had never been fitted with them.
Cheers,
Bill.

There was a rumour circulating that the flags spelt out (in Naval-speak!!) "I am operating astern propulsion" which although probably only
an urban myth would fit the Herald to a "t"....
