13/60 Steering Column Adjustment

I have a late 13/60 with the steering lock on the column. I have noticed that the column sticks out towards the driver quite a bit and I wondered if it was adjustable. I have also recently got hold of a new 'sportier' wheel and think it would be better not sitting so much in my lap.
I seem to remember hearing somewhere about it being adjustable or am I wrong?

Hi Simon

I know it is definately adjustable, something to do with the clamp under the dash I think. I will have a look in one of my numerous books tomorrow and email you the answer.

    Having got round to swapping the steering wheel, it is apparent that there is some up/down movement in the column bushes. Is this worth fixing as am worried the MOT man may object. Looks like it is a case of swapping the top and bottom bushes. Is it easy to do?

      If you take the column out, it's easy to do both bushes. You can get away with changing the top one with the column in situ if you are careful. Theoretically you should remove the old bushes, but they can remain in the tube, just knock them further into the tube, possibly even with the new bush. Ideally you should ensure the buttons on the side of the bush engage the holes in the side of the column, but even if you cut them off to help get them in the tube, they won't be going anywhere once pressed into the column tube.

        It helps if you can use a drill or something to remove or at least weaken the buttons on the old bushes to enable then to be pushed further inside. If you have a little rubber grease it will help installing the new ones, the buttons aren't hard to engage as they're not inclined to twist as they go in! I knocked mine in but if you wanted to get fancy you could always pull them in with some threaded rod and large, heavy washers and possibly (getting hazy on the exact detail!) a socket or two.         Having removed the old bushes and fitted the new ones supplied by Canleys, I am still disapointed by the amount of 'slop' in the top bush. Although slightly better than before I can still feel movement if I rock the steering wheel top to bottom. Is this always present or should it be tight? At the next monthly meet I will try to do a compare with other cars.

        You have the same experience as many others. You will NOT get the precision feel of a modern car that uses ball races or roller bearings in the steering column. Never having driven a brand new Triumph, or a really low mileage one, I cannot say how much or little slop there was on the column from new, but I suspect there was a little. A tight column could be dangerous, and with production tolerances etc, any error would be towards the slack side. I'm not sure if replacement bushes are as good as the originals, and some wear may have developed on the column itself to increase play slightly, but just enjoy the great precision, and road feel, of what the column operates!
