Lower Steering Joint

Hi Martin,
I had a similar situation with my 1200, i thought it was the lower column joint, but when i put my finger between the two halves of the joint couldn't feel any play while moving the steering wheel.
Upon closer inspection I found the play was coming from the clamp plate inside the car, i needed to loosen off the plate and the socket screw (looks like a giant grub screw) , then retighten the clamp, then the socket screw ensuring that all was 'flat' under the clamp, the process is described quite well in the Haynes manual for steering column overhaul
If this is it, should be a cheap/quick fix - Obviously if you can feel the play within the joint itself you've already found the culprit - it shouldn't have any noticable play

You are allowed an inch of movement at the rim for an MOT.
If play is more than an inch, get a smaller steering wheel.
I'm down to a 10inch one now...
A few people have fitted Triumph 2000 UJ type joints to good effect I seem to remember reading.

Thanks for the responses.
I rang Canley's yesterday to order a replacement, and they offered me the T2000 joint as a better (i.e. longer lasting) and cheaper alternative. Sounded good to me!
