Rear axle, brakes, wheels and tyres.

I was wondering wether anyone can through some light on a 13/60 chassis I'm stripping. The diff has a guard bolted to front of it. It is made of 1/2" steel and is sort of triangular in shape and extends about 3/4" below the diff. I was wondering if this is a common fitting or some kind of period mod? Bearing in mind tha the finished product will be used for trialing, it might come in very handy.
