I have two contradicting references on refitting the rear suspension. One states once everything is refitted, including the wheels, to lower the car and
then tighten the spring eye and damper bolts. The other is telling me first to support the diff then reposition the axle stands under the vertical link
allowing the half shafts to assume their static laden operating position. What is the easiest/safest method.........

Both methods acheive the same result, torquing up the bolts with the suspension under its normal static load.
The problem with the first method (putting it down with the wheels on) is that you probably then can't get a torque wrench onto the bolts anyway.
On the spitfire, I usually leave the car on stands and put an additional jack under each vertical link in turn and raise it to about normal height
before torquing things up.
Just be careful you don't pull the car off the stands/jacks whilst you're heaving on the bolts. Although I don't think any of them should be *that*
tight anyway.
