Clutch, gearbox, overdrive, propeller shaft.

Recently fitted a J type o/d to my 13/60 Herald convertible. What a difference it makes to driving it, wished I had done it a long time ago.
Anyway I have some vibration at 55 MPH which I guess is the propshaft out of balance (I fitted new U/J to it).
So does anyone know of a company in the Cambridge/East anglia area that can balance a prop shaft? I know I could get it done through one of the Triumph suppliers but there must be companies arround capable of balancing shaft?

Has anyone every done it themselves?
I once had Vitesse (YAN 480G) that vibrated, I fixed it by putting a jubilee clip on the shaft and rotated it until the vibration stopped- ran the car on axle stands on our drive way. this time I would like to do it properly!

1968 13/60 herald convertible now with O/D
New: 1977 Dolly 1500HL (with O/D) &163;200 perfect condition and just passed an MOT with NO faults! Cant undertsand why no one wants these?

AFAIK all the suppliers use these guys to balance their propshafts... last time I asked at Moss (Europe) they just gave me the address as I was local. Unfortunately in my case the prop was beyond hope as the splines were 'shagged'

so I bought a new one anyway.

Someone on one message board said that they vibrate at around 55mph (mine does too) because they are in fact too long.

Also if you have a strap-drive one, you should get rid of the straps.

Following my own posting I have found a company in St Neots who make and balance propshafts. called Bailey and Morris ltd

They have done mine will pick it up tomorrow cost about &163;50.00, seem a nice helpful friendly company. Dropped it in monday morning and just phoned them they have balanced it and it is being painted!
It will be interesting to see what difference it makes.
BTW mine is a Vittesse non-o/d shaft with one of the flanges changed (and new U/J's) to suit a J type O/D gearbox

Hmm &163;50 for a propshaft balance... ? When I needed mine doing (as previously mentioned) and had to buy a new one I only paid &163;65 for it! And that was from MOSS!

It was also 2Kg lighter than the previous one too

(fitted to race car now)

cheaper than buying one from Canley..its for a J type O/D in herald and this not a standard propshaft for it. I think Canley's cost >&163;100.
Standard props are cheap, I brought a NOS strap one for my last herald for &163;25.00
Once the U/j have been changed is seems there is a good chance that it will be out of balance....I think &163;50.00 is ok for a balancing and its close to where I live

Hi Mike,
To be honest I've never had a propshaft go out of balance by fitting new UJs. That of course is based on starting with a shaft which is in balance to begin with, while using decent quality UJs as replacement parts. I also refuse to use strap drive shafts, a solid shaft is a far better starting point.
There are plenty of NOS strap drive propshafts out there for very little money, I think Speedy Spares have been selling them for at least 15 years by now. No matter how cheap they are, I would rather put the money towards some new UJs and rebuild one of the more reliable shafts,

Have you alighned the yolks on the propshaft after replacing the uj? If so,
have a go yourself, use 2 jubilee clips as weights, fit them to the rear of the prop and turn around the prop to obtain the best result.
