Typically, as soon as I fit a new clutch and all seemed to be running smoothly, the gearbox decides to shed an internal part... the question being, which
one?! Its fine when sitting at a constant speed and when accelerating, but when decelerating using engine braking. It also only does this in 1st, 2nd and
3rd. The gearchange mechanism has also become stiffer. Ive just had the lid off the top of the box and nothing blatantly obvoius was wrong... Might it have
shed a thrust washer?
Any ideas? I'd like to have an incling as to what the problem is to get an idea of fixing timescale!
Thanks,
Ben

It may be the needle roller bearing between the input shaft and the main shaft. Or main shaft tip wear.

Ben,
Not sure if this explains the stiffer gearchange, but the rumble in first, second and third would indicate worn layshaft bearings to me.
No rumble in fourth gear because it is direct drive through the mainshaft to the output shaft. Power isn't transmitted through the layshaft and gear
cluster, hence no noise.

Hi all,
The noise got worse and worse...then lost all drive in 1st 2nd and 3rd and reverse, with lots of clunks and bangs along the way...so drove to the
place I was getting a spare gearbox from in top gear...my poor clutch! Nevermind, got a virtually unused all syncro box off a dolomite now, so on
Wednesday I'l do a disection and see what was up!
Gearbox number 2 thats packed up now!
Thanks,
Ben

Hi ben
Have you considered your problem could have been caused by towing your caravan . What does it weigh in relation to your car also nose weights
.Its just a thought because it wasnt that long ago . And now this problem has landed on you.

Hi Ray,
Its quite likely to be the caravan actually, mixed with my youthful spirited driving style, plus the previously dragging clutch, and its
high mileage! When towing i had to use max power at times, as well as cruising at max torque (about 3000 rpm) which could eat a weak
gearbox. The caravan weighs 597kg unladen, and I put about 50-70 kg at most of luggage into it, and the car weighs 826kg unladen. When
towing though, it seems to be the wind resistance which is the biggest strain, acceleration isn't too bad at all, just you hit a barrier of
wind at about 40 mph, which you can slowly plough through up to 60 if youre brave enough!! I'm not!
This new dolly box should be good though, so we'l see how it goes, got it for nowt anyway, so cant complain!
Cheers,
Ben
