I am in the process of re-building a 13/60 conv. from a rescued stripped shell on a limited budget. I have 2x 2000 saloon gearboxs both A-type and J-type
o/d. and was wondering what would be involved in fitting them. It would be nice to have the all syncro stronger box in there but I am wondering what would
be involved and has anyone done this ?

I don't wish to disappoint, but so far as I know the 6 cylinder gearboxes and 4 cylinder engines are just not compatible (and vice versa). I'd be
delighted to be proved wrong tho.

The 2000 saloon gearbox will not fit in between the chassis. There will also be problems getting the bellhousing to match up with the engine
backplate.
As others have said sell the 2000 gearbox/overdrive and use the money to buy a Spit gearbox/overdrive.

Hi Clive,
It may be possible to fit the Saloon gearbox onto the back of the engine by mixing and matching the engine backplate and other parts from the big
Saloon, but I really don't know how straightforward (or otherwise) it would be. What I DO know is that the box is too wide to fit between the chassis
rails where they taper when fitted with the 6 cylinder engine. The situation may be easier with the 4 cylinder as the unit will be sitting
approximately 3 inches further forward, but I don't know if this will help. The gearbox has been used by some in the Vitesse, but the back end of the
box has to be raised to clear the chassis, making the driveline of the propshaft less than straight.
Just a few vague thoughts on the subject, let us know how you get on if you proceed. The big gearbox was reportedly used by the factory on some of the
racing Spitfires, so there may be a good precedent for what you are trying to do, they did however have the advantage of easy access to machining
facilities.......
Cheers,
Bill.

You have to cut and widen the chassis rails to make it fit, though i do not know if you can mate the gearbox up to a 4 cylinder, the chassis mods are
fairly straight forward.

The 2000 backplate could be drilled out to fit the Herald engine.
The starter motor is on the other side, if the flywheels are the same then the Herald starter ring should match up to the starter motor.
But I am unsure about the clutch operating set-up, could be problems with clearance. It is different than the Vitesse.
