Hi there
Two 13/60 subjects:-
Water cooling. When I fill my radiator up (changed the thermostat at the weekend) - run the engine(heater on) , pressure increases, water pours out of the
overflow pipe, until the thermostat opens. Then I top the radiator up. Is this normal? Found the radiator below level again the next morning. Where has all
the water gone?
Exhaust smoke. Seems to be a lot of blue smoke when running stationary, and less when running on the road. Also black deposits coming out of the
exhaust.
Any relation to the water problem do you think?
I was going to change the head gasket next (seems to be a little bit of mayonaise on the oil filler cap). Any other suggestions? Engine done about 57,000
miles.

Hi Dave,
There is supposed to be an air gap above the waer in the radiator, excess waster will be blown through the overflow to find the optimum level. If yout
top it up, it will do it again. The water level should always cover the top of the radiator elements when viewed through the filler, if it drops below
only then have you got a problem.
Blue smoke is burning oil, probably coming down the valve stems. This is worst at idle, though you will get a puff of blue smoke each time you change
gear or squeeze the throttle from idle. You don't by chance have one of those useless external rocker feed pipes fitted? They're always good for
throwing excess oil down the valve guides.
While mayonnaise is a symptom of a blown head gasket, it can simply be condensation inside the crank case. Som oils are more prone to this kind of
problem than others. Carry out an oil and filter change using decent quality 20w50 before condemning the head gasket, I would expect to see something
more drastic happening before jumping to the conclusion that the head gasket's blown,

I'll do the checking this weekend. Not changing the headgasket would be ideal.
