Hi Tom,
Who rebuilt the engine? Given enough time, excessively advanced timing could cause burning of valves or pistons, but your problem sounds like bearings. Do you have receipts for the work done on the engine, just to see exactly how much of the job was "re" versus "con"?

Tom,
I'll leave Bill to answer the 'rebuild quality' question, but in short excessive advance can destroy an engine. It usually manifests in (as Bill says) burned out valves, but beyond that the 'pinking' will cause shockwaves that will evetually destroy the piston if allowed to continue.
I've seen pistons 'dissapear' completely due to this - e.g. when the head came off there was only a con-rod in No4!!!
If your engine is knocking then it needs to come apart to find out why - as Bill says make this the engine builders problem - not yours (if you can).

Nig/Bill,
On this note, is it possible my vacuum advance is working too much? Since I bought a new tube and connectors, the connector to the dizzy has never been tight, so the other day I clamped it on with a zip tie, which made it much tighter. The engine must have been pinking after this as it would only do 75 flat out, and take ages to get there. I then retarded the ignition, but this made the low down power drop significantly, with no noticeable improvement in top end. I have now got rid of the zip tie and today its back to its usual 85! What a difference a length of plastic strapping can make!
What does pinking sound like inside the (very noisy vibrating) car? and at what speeds / geras am I most likely to notice it?
