Can an excessively advanced timing damage an engine?

Posted By : Tom Higgins, 04-Jan-2004, 09:03pm

The 1500 engine in my Herald 1200 was excessively advanced (about 20 degrees BTDC) and pinking badly. It is a recon engine that has only done about 2000 miles but it makes a horrible knocking sound just above idle.

Could the timing have damaged it? If so, will new bearings fix it?

Thanks,
Tom
