Grinding noises - not good!

My GT6 is making some really bad grinding noises coming from the bell housing. My first instinct was that it was the helix gear on the starter not disengaging as the starter was getting particularly hot, but when you dip the clutch the noise stops.

I have taken the starter motor out and all seems well. I need to take the gearbox out to replace the clutch release bearing in the near future, so it looks like I will now be doing this at the weekend. Any suggestions as to what else it could be? Is it possible that some foreign object could have made its way into the bell housing?

Very unlikely that a foriegn object has dropped in.........from painful experience................my vitesse box was the same and the main gearbox bearing was about to throw its lot in.Drain the oil and check for bits of bearing at the bottom of the tub.There were rollers and bits of crap in the oil when i drained mine.I hope i`m wrong obviously Ingrid.

  S'pose it could be the release bearings making the noise - and as you're replacing them anyway I hope that's it.

    Nig, I think this could be another of your master strokes of turning what sounds like major expense into little expense. Let us know what it was Ingrid.

      OK, I can tell you are all dying to know what it was! I took the gearbox off yesterday, and out dropped a socket. Fortunately it hadn't done any damage, and yes it was one of mine.
      
      Whilst the gearbox was off, I took the liberty of replacing the clutch release bearing. The new one is a huge improvement - it is a struggle to turn the old one by hand, so hopefully when it is all back together tomorrow it will be much quieter.
      
      I replaced the speedo cable a few weeks ago, and ever since the speedo has been running about 20% fast (this is the first time I have had a speedo). There is a right angled adapter between the gearbox and speedo cable which may be changing the ratio - I can't find it in my workshop manual or parts book. Can anyone tell me if the speedo will be more accurate without it, or whether I could get a different one with a different gearing?

        The angle drive simply turns the drive through 90 degrees - it isn't up or down geared, simply 1:1.
        Speedo errors can be down to the wrong speedo, the wrong diff, different tyre sizes to original plus different speedo drive gears being installed in the gearbox. Add to this the fact that the magnets in the speedo will have relaxed with age and you have a multitude of potential causes. Others will be better able to advise you on identifying the correct versus incorrect speedos etc on a GT6,

        A lesson to us all - why you should keep your tools tidy. I keep all my sockets on clips, count them all out and count them all back.
