Hi, new owner here.
I have found my reverse gear to sometimes give a rumble. I find that I need to stop, put the car into first gear, then select reverse gear to get a
smoother change. Is this due to the plates alinging? It's my first classic, is this usual?
cheers

This is all I can think of:
If I remember it right, the reverse gear on the main shaft (the output shaft of the gear box) is round the outside of the sliding collar that selects
1st and 2nd. The collar moves towards the back of the box to select 1st and towards the front to select 2nd.
The collar is in the middle position for reverse, 3rd and 4th, but in reverse it turns the other way to all the other gears. So if it is not quite in
the middle position it could be touching some of the bits for 1st or 2nd and making some noise.
Sticking the car in 1st before you go into reverse is somehow making sure the collar ends up where it should be.
So why is the collar getting into the wrong place? It's probably a worn selector fork, especially if your synchros seem OK.
I would change the oil (remember use GL4 not GL5) and look for little bits of brass. If this is the only problem with the box you can probably soldier
on for some time, although it's hard to tell from an e-mail exactly what a noise sounds like!
Good luck
Van

More likely there is a little clutch drag, or user is trying to engage reverse too quickly. If one is used to synchromesh on all gears, straight
cut pinions as on reverse gear of "our" gearboxes will seem unusual.

Hi,
once again thanks for all your advise (glad I joined this club, feel a bit like a fish out of water at the moment), I am having it looked at by
a triumph freindly mechanic (father in law) this weekend to see what he thinks, I think it's probibly down to human error and the fact that I
am not quite used to it and am trying to select to quickly or the fact that the clutch bitting point is a lot high than I am used to, I drive
my girlfreind's herlad a lot but her gear box is like a broom stick in a bucket! the gt6 gear box is a lot more precise. I will keep you posted

Hi Van,
cheers for the advise regarding the collar position, if I select 4th then reverse, it engages much more smoothly.
many thanks once again!
