While my cylinder head is being tarted up I thought I'd get round to cleaning off the remnants of the old gasket from the block. What I found was that a
number of waterways were covered by the gasket!! I checked with the replacement gasket and that has the required amount of holes. no wonder I've had
overheating troubles. So I wonder what happened here then? Makes you wonder how it managed the 10CR and other long trips, jeez its been over the Alps
twice??

Unlucky! How long's that been on there for? Do you know where it (the gasket) was from...?
My engine never seems to get particularly hot (according to the gauge) since my heater's been cleaned out... Unfortunately I get a bit toasty sometimes
now instead... anyone know if the heater can be turned right off??!!!?

Ummm, it should turn completely off with the valve. Check the cable is set up right, otherwise a new valve!
Cheers
