Hi guys,
I've just finished taking the bodywork off my mk1, and noticed that most of the chassis is in pretty good nick. The left hand front outrigger is a bit
rotten though. My question is this, given that I'll be replacing it myself, does anyone have any suggestions as to how best to make sure I put it in the
right place?
Any info gratefully received.
Cheers.

Tony,
Probably best is to cut off the old one and tack weld the new with the body on, then remove body and complete welds. But as you have got further than
that, make your self a jig.
Tack weld two lengths of angle iron diagonally from the chassis rail on either side of the O/R to an apex at its tip, to fix its position horizontally.
You will have the chassis on stands, I presume, so measure the height of the tip from the floor for vertical position. Check before doing anything else
that the old and new O/Rs have the same shape at the tip, cut out the old and tack weld the new in the position you have fixed. You could do the same
by measurement from fixed points on the chassis too, if you don't want to mess it with old welds.

Thanks John,
As you say, I'm past the stage of having a body to use. I think a few bits of angle iron should do the job nicely. I've got a few other things to
do first, like strip the suspension and other stuff off the chassis, but I'll let you know when I've had a go at it.
On another note, I've just taken the engine off and put it on a stand. I've never seen one away from the car, it's b****y huge! Can't wait to get
it going and get it back in again.
Cheers, Tony.

Tony,
Now you know why older men favour six cylinders.
