I have just stripped down my D204 distributor from my MKIII to inspect it. Fortunately there does not seem to be much wear but I think the centrifugal
advance assembly may not be correct. The two springs are identical and are both under tension.
I expected to see one under tension and one "sloppy" as normally, surely, one weight moves out during increasing rpm before the other.
Timing the car on the basis of increasing the advance until the engine nearly pinks under heavy load has led me to set the ignition (stroboscope at
tickover) to 16 degrees BTDC. Despite this I cannot get the engine to pink. Is there someone perhaps who is familiar with the D204 who could advise me
please?

On the Delco 204 both the advance weight springs should be the same.
If the car is a late Mk111 then it has a lower CR and different cam than the early Mk111 version. Late Mk111 run on 98 octane Where as the early Mk111
ran on 101 octane.
As a result late Mk111 suffer less from pinking the static timing on a Late Mk111 is 10 degrees BTDC.

Dave,
thanks for the info. Do you (or anyone else) know if there is a Haynes manual on Distributors?

I don't think there is. The Triumph GT6 Handbook give some info.
