My D Type overdrive is now sort of working but only about half the time and only in fourth gear. It seems to usually drop in OK but when I drop it out, it
sometimes doesn't appear to make a lot of difference (yet revs/ratios appear "normal" i.e. as if it wasn't properly engaged). I have:
- Overhauled the relay on the bulkhead (which cured the nothing working at all problem at the outset)
-topped up gearbox oil
- mended the gearknob switch/wires
-taken out, cleaned and put back the operating valve (the one accessible by the 7/16 " nut on top of the gear drive)
- had the silver plunger assembly replaced with brand new and confirmed that it is working
-adjusted the operating lever (I think!) behind the overdrive inspection hatch - and can see that IT MOVES when I throw the switch in/out.
...But looking at the John Hills link, it looks as if the only thing left is surgery on the overdrive clutch plates - which presumably means (for me a
Garage job) £300 + job i.e. £90 for the clutch + labour (ps any garage recommendations in East Sussex/Kent borders?)
Any thoughts before I run out of options? Could it be that theo erating lever needs one more go at fine adjustment?

If your O/D is working you'll feel it kick in (sort of like an automatic gear change) and the rpm will drop. Once you disengage it there will be an
appreciable rise in engine revs unless you're using it at too low a speed in which case you'll hardly notice it. Check it at around 2500 to 3000 rpm
and see what happens. There's not really much point in using it under 2000 rpm. You should be fit to feel it engage and disengage without needing to
consult the rev counter.
Make sure the inhibitor at the end of the selector shaft is unworn as this may be why it's only working in 4th. The switch with which this makes
contact should also be unworn; they have a tendency to wear almost flat and therefore don't work!
If you've tried everything else it may call for major repairs or a recon / second hand unit.
