Not sure I really understand the question?
The new speedo cable must fit the output from the 90 degree converter. If the cable won't free from that end, or the angle is such you can't
get the new cable on, then you can remove the converter from the side of the overdrive.
The converter is not any integral part of the o/d so you cannot harm it by removing the converter, nor should you lose any oil through it.
Grinding the chassis seems rather drastic, although space IS tight. I have always been able to squeeze a mole wrench in at some angle to tackle
the knurled ring which retains the converter or the cable end. Just make sure you turn it the right way to loosen! (Anticlockwise when looking
"into" the o/d)
Although there is more risk of damaging the ring (and you can't replace the one on the converter separately) you could always try the hammer
and narrow chisel or punch to persuade it to start to undo.
Rather than grind the chassis, how about getting a little bit more room by jacking up the rear of the gearbox? You shouldn't need to undo the
propshaft for the extra little clearance you probably need.
