Hi all,
Apologies to anyone who might have seen this cross-posted at another site
Wondering whether anyone knows what's supposed to be in the angle drive mechanism for the speedo? (overdrive gearbox)
I noticed the speedo had stopped working so pulled the transmission cover last night and found that the angle drive mechanism had disintergrated (not happy
as it is only about 1.5 years old - i.e. probably done less than 6k miles! The speedo isn't stiff so can't imagine why this has failed). What I found was
that nothing had sheared, just that the end plate had come off, and sitting on the chassis rail was a flat circular disc (presumably to retain everything),
a pressed disc presumably to act as a spring, and the pinion itself. Before I reswage these 3 components back myself properly, is this all that's supposed
to be there? The teeth on the pinion and the worm gear appear to be in good condition.
I'm currently thinking about the letter of complaint to the vendor... This part wasn't cheap, and last time it was a right pain in the backside to replace!
Luckily, I only had to travel 30 miles with it not working - had it been further I'm sure the parts would have been lost!
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter, cannot answer your question but I have a spare second hand angle drive your welcome to if yours is nadged, I think I've even got the forked
bracket that holds it in place! Let me know.

I had the same problem a number of years ago with an angle drive supplied by a well known supplier. I reasembled the drive and cripped over the end to
stop the end cap from coming off again.
It sounds to me if you have all the bits.

You should be able to check you have all the bits by holding everything together the way you think it goes and turning the square bit that goes
into the gearbox. The square hole on the other side should rotate. If this is too hard to see then stick a small flat bladed screwdriver in there
it should rotate as you turn the other bit.
I have had a problem where the square bit becomes detached from the round bit (visible from the outside) that should rotate with it, and I have
been able to solder the 2 back together with a powerful soldering iron.

Peter
I have just done replaced the angle drive on my vitesse - also supplied from a well known supplier for over &163;30. As I was fitting it, the
cap came off and left a pile of bits on the chassis rail. However, they were in order which was (from inside to out):
pinion, pressed disc (with pressed bit facing inward), thick disc, thin disc
I replaced in that order and bashed over the casing to keep it in place. It's currently working and still ok after my trip to Duxford at the
weekend.
