Can anyone help. I was driving with the car in 4th and in overdrive when the revs jump up and a puff of smoke came from the gearbox tunnel and now the
overdrive does not work.

Steve
Whenever I can't offer a practical solution (all the time) I offer the suggestion that people in bother always look in the archives - just to the right
and click on 'gearbox'. Do this on the Spitfire archive as well. Lots of O/D problems. also go to Canley Classics website as they have some info on the
D type O/D.
Wish I could remember the O/D specialist at Stafford as he was really helpful. He was from the Midlands somewhere?
I'm sure someone else will chip in with more advice though.

They're called Overdrive repair specialists ... or something beginning with Overdrive ... they supply all the parts that everyone uses, and they're
based in Sheffield.

Revs jump up = overdrive stopped working. Since it's only a puff of smoke and not lots of smoke and a burning smell (usually accompanied by lots of men
in yellow helmets) I'd suspect electrical... the wires have shorted out somewhere below hence the smoke. Check your wiring around the gear stick to see
if anything has cut or crushed it, check around the bulkhead relay and generally just test the overdrive wiring circuit. Hopefully it's nothing more
serious. One of mine used to spark on changing gear..
