Overdrive or not (part deux)

Having spent some days in the Spitfire messageboard I've plonked my problem here where it belongs.

My car is a 1971 GT6. I have acquired a gearbox and 'J' Type O/D. I took out my gearbox and have realised that the new box-O/D is some 4" longer; my old mounts seem not to be of any use. Trouble is I can't see where the O/D mounts fit, there doesn't seen to be any brackets/holes in the chassis unless I've missed them! What do I need and who might have these?

Also I seem to need a 90 degree angle drive for the speedo - will the original cable stretch to this and does anyone have one (angle drive)?

I have the shorter prop shaft so that's OK.

I'm keeping the 3.27 diff to see what it goes like.

I don't know how much the mk3 differs from the mk1 in this area, but I've got a few photos of my O/D on the chassis and can take more if you want.

If you have trouble finding a right angle drive, go to the Totally Triumph Net - Jeff McNeal (May his name be blessed) has recently had the same problem and found a US supplier who has some of these at a reasonable price. I'd quote the name, but can't remember and am too lazy to gopher it.

Humn as far as I know (Not very much but there you go) a 'J' type O/D was not OE (Original equipment) in a GT6.

However, if you had a standard non-O/D box in your car then you will need the mounting plate rubber bracket thingy - if you have a parts manual have a look at the O/D pics in front of the index - that should help.

One other option is to contact Canley Classics as they offer a D type to J type conversion kit for the GT6 - I believe Steve is the guy who rebuilds the gearboxes.

  Canley were engaged so I rang Jigsaw and spoke to Mark. I explained the situation regarding the J type and a 71 GT6: "Yes sir, we do a kit. What you have to do is..."
  
  So I get a mounting kit, new speedo cable, secondhand R/A speedo drive (Â£40 elsewhere) and an extension cover for the tunnel; at least that's what I think he said. Funny when you listen to people working out how much it will all be - especially when they count out loud down the phone..."Â£28.50...Â£36.30...Â£55...that will be Â£70 including post".
  
  So what I have to do is fit the gearbox + O/D and support it in position, having already cut back the existing tunnel for access to the prop bolts, with the rubber mount in position and the plate lined up on the chassis, drill holes to suit. Bolt up, fill with oil (GL4?), fit speedo drive and cable, tunnel back on (where's me plumbers mate), carpets back, radio back, and ....I'll let you know?
