my GT6 convertible at the local car meet/show Hertford Heath every first Sunday of the month between 11:30am and 2pm. Everything from vintage with pram wheel to latest Lambo's.

      Colin, stainless gearbox fabricated but not fitted as I need to cut holes for the seat belt anchors (gb tunnel is swept to the heelboard), but the mirrored door cards and back panel that curves round the back from b post to the other b post are in, no pics yet. Waiting like everyone else for the weather to break to crack on with it (have to work outside). Deadline is for the South of England meet. Long list to do for LeMans - all on my profile,

        How about this one - 285 bhp Volvo T5 unit in my MK 3 - having only extrated 210 bhp out of a 2.3cc feul injected unit then time for change.
        
        Weight distribution also will be resolved as the complete Volvo alloy unit weighs about the same as a 1500 unit - lets face it spits handle better than Gt's
        
        I have created a monster - Its called a GT5 - keep you posted

        I think that Vin wants to get the Supercharger water coolers on top of the engine Chrome Plated, and then show them off through a hole in the top of the bonnet - it saves having to make a bulge.

        I was thinking of taking 3 inches out of the middle of the car to make it lower and sleeker like the one infront of my banana in the photo below, but then I got this engine.......and thought of splitting the car down the middle and widening it by 12", but then , then, .....still in the design stage but am trying to resist buying bits for the project but then I see some part I 'must' have.....
        
        and yes Kevin, the engine top does lend itself to cutting a hole the size of the ally bits on the top (as they are the only bits that are that high on the engine) and chroming them, added to my plans to paint it with chrome paint (proper chrome paint, not the type that comes out like grey paint).

        But bring on the new generation of Triumphs, there are a few triumphs getting non Triumph powerfull engines at the moment on the forums, should make for an interesting next couple of years - sort of LM2008 time!

        Like the V8 supercharged idea - 400 ponnies - thats serious bhp - might be an easier converstion to put the mk1 Spit inside the v8 - rather than the more traditional method of fitting the engine to the car - joking aside should be a monster coverstion - bhp/ton will be seroiusly impressive.
        
        If like me you experience problems fitting the block into the chassis then simply remove the offending part of the chassis - simple!!! ( of course a new cross member/s will replace the original one 4' forward)
        
        Like you say a new era in modified Triumphs hopefully?

        Mark, yes, not adverse to a bit of 'gentle' persuation myself to make things fit. One option I was thinking of was widening the who;e car by 12 inches, this would split the chassis down the middle leaving loads of room for a wide engine. My rough measurements show that I could get it into a stock spitfire silhouette, will need to find a couple of inches width in the engine bay (like yours).
        
        Feels a bit like the end of the Lion King, start of a new era (tons of horses in a small car should appeal to the next generation?)

        I presume you mean 4 inches (4"), not 4 feet (4') forward!
        More of a challenge is how to deal with the steering rack. That cannot really be sited anywhere else as it needs to put the track rods where they are for correct steering geometry. You could of course reposition the steering arms, but that then starts needing different suspension uprights etc.
        I now begin to understand why some RWD manufacturers stuck with steering boxes as long as they did as the options for locating drag links etc (they can be bent which a rack cannot!) or using "virtual geometry" does give more options for engine location and block/sump design. (A deep block extending below crank level is generally a good thing although it does tend to increase engine height (as do of course do overhead cams and variable valve timing trickery etc).
        Good luck. A 5 cylinder Spit should have an awesome performance and an addictive exhaust note!

        Yeah interesting thoughts on the steering rack/ geometry - what my current plan is to move to rack 2'' forward - so that the rear fixing of the 'u' clamp that bolts the rack to the chassis uses the existing front fixing hole - then using the new chassis box section to bolt the rest of the rack down to.
        
        Also I can cast up some new steering arms that are 2'' longer if required.

        Having been following a thread recently on another forum about converting steering box to rack and pinion, it seems that relative position of rack to steering arms is crucial to steering geometry, especially avoidance of bump steer and tyre wear.
        Moving the rack forward will change the angle of the track rods, and while you will be able to get correct toe-in when wheels are straight ahead, the intended Ackermann geometry will go adrift as you as you start to turn a corner.
        Fitting longer steering arms would restore the geometry, but can you fit them inside the wheel? And if they are 2" longer, with a normal rack, you will get less maximum lock and so a wider turning circle. Fortunately, the Herald and Spit etc can probably afford to forego a bit of lock!
        Does anyone know what the steering arms are made of? If cast, they MUST be the right grade of cast STEEL. I would however expect such items to be a forging. I'd probably prefer to fabricate new ones than use a casting unless I could be sure of the right spec and casting process.

        Brendon, yes, the car infront of my car in the line up of cars IS my car also, copied my car into 'paint', chopped 3" out the middle, and pasted it back into the picture infront of my original car just to see what it looked like,
        
        personally I thing the modded one looks more like a spitfire than the original spitfire.....
