hi there, I'm 19 and i have just bought my first restoration project (1971 GT 6), and decided (or should that be discovered?!) that insurance is is going to be a lot regardless. so, i have decided to keep an original theme, but am going to use subtle touches such as tripple webber carbs, uprated road springs, shocks and bushes, etc etc etc. could any one let me know the cost implications of the stromberg to tripple webber conversion, and where i might find the carbs? A triple weber set up will put you back well over &163;1000

if you buy it all new. I believe webers are currently about &163;250-&194;&163;300 a piece. Plus of course you'll need the manifold and linkages. After its all bolted on you'll then need a rolling road session to get it all set up - otherwise you'll be guzzling far more petrol than necessary and losing power.

Even if you buy second hand webers, it's more than likely they'll need refurbishing and setting up for your car anyway - and that can take the price back up to that of a new set.

The Strombergs are a good carb and can be good for a good 50% power increase, you could swap them for SU's are they are easier to maintain, but there isn't really any power gains in that. Of course you could go for a triple SU set up which looks really nice and still provides mucho power.

There is nothing at all subtle about putting webers on

, you can hear the induction 'roar' from quite a distance - it can even be louder than the engine!!!

I have....erm, 'opinions' about webers being the first modification on a car as many may tell you. You could get a similar (or better) performance modification by changing the cam, filters and exhaust and still have change from &163;600. IMHO webers can be considered after this lot and the head has been flowed properly. Then, when you put the webers on your car will fly.

Uprating the shocks and springs is recomended in my book, but then I do like a harder ride.

I've been pondering a triple SU set up on my 2.5 that is going in my Vitesse... is it worth it Nig? And are the manifolds available or is it case of making your own?

John Thomason, the Spitfire MkIV/1500 Register Secretary, made some triple SU inlet manifolds for his Spitfire 6.

John wrote a courier article at the time he made those manifolds. It was quite an involved process I seem to remember from reading the article.

wow, thanks very much, i will look in to that! while i have the attention of a clear pro, any chance you know of a decent primer i can spray a couple of coats on to the inside/outside of the bare metal shell of the new and sparkly welded mk3 that rests in my garage...god i love 'er!

Hehe - as many people who've come to races will tell you, I'm not best known for my painting skills

But, a good bare metal 'etching' primer would be a good base coat, and red lead has always been a good bet too.

Maybe some painting expert can help more.
