Could this be the sound of a failing solenoid?

Everything was working fine when I started!

Just stripped an re-sprayed the bulkhead on my gtfire.

To do a proper job I took off all the gubbins including Clutch & brake m/c, flasher electrics, coil and solenoid.

Everything now looks nice an neat but haven't been able to get her to start.

I've been quite careful when replacing any electrical components to clean back to fresh metal to ensure good earth, and have cleaned up all connectors with emery paper.

On turning the key I just get a "click" but no sign of turning over.

I've checked for good earth with one of those circuit testers which light up when circuit is made - lights up when I would expect it to which indicates connections are all ok.

I suspect a dodgy solenoid - one of the connectors seemed a bit loose and is almost certainly 35 yrs old.

Does this "click" (presumably starter not engaging properly?) sound like a solenoid problem?

The click sounds exactly like a flat battery click, but battery has good charge.

Any help appreciated.
