Yup, sounds like a failed solenoid to me. The click will be the solenoid energising.
Connect your test lamp between the solenoid connection to the starter and the earth on the battery. I don't htink it'll light up = failed solenoid.
If it does light up then there's not enough current getting to (or from) the starter to make it work. You need a meter to check that enough current is leaving the solenoid. Another likely culprit would be the body to engine earth. Take a jump lead from the battery earth to the engine block.
I'm sure there will be other ideas.

Turns out it was actually the sound of a failing triumph enthusiast who can't remember which wire goes where!
Anyway I now have fitted a new solenoid care of TD fitchett for a very reasonable &163;11.50 (they're just 10 mins down the road from me)
Car sounds much more healthy on turnover so I suspect the solenoid WAS on the way out anyway.
Very satisfying when it finally all works !
