Hi,
Just been doing a final check around the car ( 73 Mk III ) before taking it for an MOT ( last one 14 years ago) and noticed something strange.
With the lights on the brake lights dont shine anywhere near as bright as with the lights off. I know its all something to do with the relay thingy in the
passenger side rear wing, but are my lights and brake lights working correctly.
Will the MOT tester know of this function or will it get a fail.
What is the purpose of this relay thingy.
Thanks,
Tony.

The relay thingy is called the night dimming relay and it does exactly what it says on the tin.
With the lights on it reduces the brightness of the brake lights and the rear indicators - something that is not present on modern cars, although in my
opinion they could do with it!
The MOT tester can't fail you for the design of the cars electrics if they do then just show him the wiring diagram in your handbook the relay is
clearly marked.
Hope that clarifies that,
Cheers,
Yan

Yan,
Many thanks for the reply. I thought everything was correct but thought it prudent to check.
Incidentally did check my Haynes manual and the wiring diagrams do not show a night dimming relay.
Thanks,
Tony.
