Hello Martin. I am engaged in a similar exercise with TWO sets of Rotoflex that I am rebuilding! You are correct in that the original Churchill tool is
not generally available BUT there is a "work around"...........
1) Fit bearing cups into vertical link
2) Fit outer race (un-greased) and shell into link
3) Fit Hub, ensuring fully down
4) Fit inner race
5) Put spacer and shims (you will need an assortment of these) in place and measure across bearing inner race with a straight edge and using feeler
gauges aim to achieve the optimal float of 5 to 25 thou. The hub and shims (as chosen) should be within this tolerance and HIGHER than the inner
bearing race.
6) Fit outer shaft fully home and tighten with a slave nut to 90 lb/ft
7) This should produce a VERY SLIGHT play. If too much, reduce shims. If preloaded, add shims.
8) When you are happywith the results, take apart, grease and fit inner seal.
The shims are only available in 3 thou, but Mick Dolphin has some of the larger distance pieces.
Hope this helps
Lindsay
The photo shows two shims as fitted on one of my hubs. On others there have been spacers AND shims and on one NONE at all! (That particular hub was
ruined, as was the stoneguard and spacer...all because the PO had not shimmed it properly).
