Gents,
A quick question.
I rebuilt the brake calipers on my GT6 lastnight. I have fitted the new piston bore seals and replaced the pistons.
When refitting the pistons they feel 'very' tight. I was unable to push them right in by hand and had to use a clamp to get them right back.
Is this normal with the new seals fitted???????
The last thing I want to do is put them on the car if they are wrong!!
Regards,
Clive

It's very difficult, if not impossible, to push the pistons in by hand and I suspect if you could then they're likely to leak fluid. The seals need to
be lubricated with brake fluid as you assemble them and have to be pushed in exactly square. You can use a G clamp and a block of wood to ensure it
goes in square as long as you're careful, stop if you feel any resistance as they should slide in easily with this method.
If anything is wrong they'll either lose fluid when you press the pedal or they won't release their grip when you take your foot off the pedal. As long
as the pedal goes hard when pressed and the pads release their grip enough to turn the disk easily then you've got it right.

Thanks Steve,
I pushed the pistons out lastnight, lubed with brake fluid, refitted. They now slide in and out perfectly.
The problem now is trying to get the seal clips to stay in place and not slip off when pressure is applied!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clive.

There was a post on this very issue I think within the last month. Can't remember the details, but it seemed to be quite a simple solution.

Does the outer dust seal sit in place correctly without the clip?
I had trouble with a set of after market seals on my Spitfire. The dust seal would not sit in place without the ring clip in place, but getting
the clip to go and stay on just sat on the bench was more or less impossible.
I managed to get hold of a OE seal kit (Lucas or Gerling, can't remember which). On this the dist seal outer diameter was about 5mm greater.
Put in place over the piston and the outer sat comfortably over the caliper and the ring clip just popped on.

Not sure what make the kit is???? Came in a bag from Canley's.
The dust seal fits nicely over the ledge on the caliper and the clip fits over and holds it in place.
The problem arrises when the pistons slide out of the bores. Instead of the clips and dust seals staying in place they slip off the ledge,
leaving the pistons exposed!!!!

Clive.

My problem kit was from Canley's.
On my car the problem kit had to be streatched to fit over the caliper - the OE kit just sat in that position naturally.
If your seal naturally sits in the correct position without any effort on your part it's probably a different issue.

Type 14 and type 16PB caliper repair kits are readily available as Lucas parts. I have heard reports that the aftermarket seals can
be difficult to fit, but the OEM kits are more difficult to obtain for the type 12 and 16P calipers.
Cheers,
Bill.
