I have a constant drip from my gear box drain plug. Tried to tighten it but thats just made it worse.
It looks like my plug has been replaced with a standard bolt. The drain plug in the Haynes manual looks like a tapered thread with a square on one end. I
assume as the tapered plug is screwed in this forms the seal?
Thinking about my options. It looks like im gonna have to take out the plug and drain the box - not had a look yet but is the underside face where the bolt
head meets the gearbox flat enough to put a copper compression wash on?
Thanks - Andy

I have a single rail gearbox on the bench at the moment & the face is not flat, the 3 rail is probably the same. I should try a new tapered plug
& fit it with some sealant.

You really need to replace the plug! I doubt the casting face is smooth enough for a copper washer. Maybe a fibre washer, but since you would need to
take the bolt out (and hence drain the box) anyway to replace the bolt, you should replace it with the proper item. I think it is the same plug as for
sump and diff, indeed the same plug as the gearbox oil level plug. You may find adding some PTFE tape (available as a sealing tape for plumbing
fittings) to the threads helps make a good seal, although the taper threads, if clean, should form a good seal anyway.

Go for the later drain plug, these have a 3/4" hex and a magnet instead of the 3/8" square.

Smashing - thanks guys!
Good thinking Van - will go for the larger plug with the hex head - who sells em?
