I have spend most of this afternoon rebuilding my GT6 gearbox. Lots of NOS parts and a new mainshaft from Canley. All tolerances strictly observed, as laid
down in the big red book, and everything, apparently where it should be. However, I cannot turn the input shaft in neutral without the output shaft also
turning! It is effectively in 4th gear whilst in neutral. I think I need to sleep on this and get a bit of perspective. Any demon gearbox rebuilders out
there know what I may have done wrong??

Lindsay, the syncro hubs have probably stuck, put an ajustable spanner over the input and output splines and give them a jolt, you will probably
rediscover neutral
take care not to gouge the splines or the shafts, the marks will act as stress raisers

EUREKA! Thanks Jonathan. That did the trick. Both synchro hubs are NOS as are the baulk rings, and the combination of tolerances and friction
nearly had me stripping it down again, but your tip did the job. Ah! I will sleep soundly tonight.

I'm just rebuilding mine, where did you find the NOS stuff, or is that a secret?!

Charlie, I have been accumulating NOS from a variety of sources. Mick Dolphin is probably THE best source of gearbox parts but he does not
have everything. I found the bearings, 3/4 synchrohub and laygear shaft on ebay over the last year. New 1st, 2nd and reverse gears and 1/2
synchro hub from the USA (the exchange rate makes this very favourable at the moment). New mainshaft from Dave at Canley and various small
parts from Stoneleigh. Remember that some of the single rail Spitfire 1500/TR7/Marina and Dolomite 1850 gearbox parts are identical.
Laygear clusters are very hard to find, luckily mine was in good shape. Tracing the parts is part of the fun (and frustration) of Triumph
ownership. If you are missing any of the thrust washers contact me off post as I have a selection of NOS in various sizes plus all my
replaced parts if you need secondhand.

I've just bought a rebuild kit from Canley. I guess it will all be repro stuff, lets hope the quality is ok. All the bearings & the
layshaft in my box are knackered but the synchro rings, 3 of which I think are repro, & the mainshaft look ok. I've one broken
synchro hub spring so I'll replace them all.
Once I get it back together I'll see if I need to change any thrust washers, thanks for the offer.
