1 - no, it's not a straight swap, you need the correct adapter to match the gearbox and some chassis mounting plates
2 - I suppose so but it'll be a major pain to do it - best take the opportunity to pull the box out to work on it. Also you might want to take a look at your clutch whilst you're at it.
3 - not really anything more than a visual check unless you have a test rig
Make sure it's very clean. Personally I would
get it tested at somewhere like Overdrive Spares or Canley Classics - if it's crap imagine how hacked off you're gonna be!
4 - wiring is difference, simpler, no relay.

The part numbers listed by Rimmers for the 3-rail gearbox mainshafts are different for the 2 types of overdrive, so presumably the gearbox would have to come apart to be rebuilt. The adaptor plate for 3-rail box to J-type is also pretty rare, having only been used for a couple of years before the single rail box took over. So unless you want to rebuild the gearbox at the same time and try to find these bits you are probably better off getting the D-type reconditioned.
The J-type can be removed and replaced with the gearbox still in the car, not sure about the D-type.

If anyone needs one, I have a very clean J-type loking for a home. It came of a late 2500tc saloon and was working fine. Don't want a fortune for it. contact me if of use. Will also be breaking a 1500 spit with jtype fitted so there's another option
Oh yes if going that way, will need a1300 dolomite clutch plate to get correct splines.-

As I have a J-Type which is supposed to be better than the rest would
I be better off buying the adaptor from Canleys and getting the J.
checked out or is it STILL not that simple??-

Standards, yeah they're great, we have loads of them!
If it were me, I would talk to Dave at Canley Classics (you may have a different preferred supplier) and get a price for converting your gearbox to a J type with you supplying the overdrive unit and gearbox and them supplying the adapter, gaskets, test rig etc - for the sake of a professional check over I think it's false economy to bang it all together and hope it works. If the J type is shagged then at least you know and you can go back to plan B, a D type!
If you are inclined to just bang it all together and hope then good luck and you might get away with it, you might not. Be warned though, Dave is busy so you might have to wait your turn The J type is a better unit
but the D type is perfectly adequate for a road car, a little less robust (not much) a little more electrickery around it (not
much) and a little weaker (not much). If you want to refettle your D type yourself then you're on your own, better to just exchange
it for a recon one and pay the money - that would be your simplest solution.

That's probably the easieest route. Just a quick thought - if you need the car to be off the road for the min time then you might be able to give the J type as an exchange for a recon D type then you will have all the parts to hand to do the job without hassle. Ther might be a value in the old D type as "core" too.-

Got the re-con O/D, trying ti fit it to the gearbox. It won't go down!!
It goes most of the way on the shaft but then stops. looking in the O/D
it looks as though there are two rows of splines and they are not lined up.
I can't get them to move independently, any ideas?-

By visually comparing the alignment of the OD splines with the gearbox shaft it should be clear how they should be positioned. By "wiggling" with a long thin screwdriver, you CAN adjust the alignment. You may also need to rotate the output flange slightly to get the splines to meet the shaft.
Your "foul" may also be the pump cam. You can only get the pump roller on the cam in its lowest position. There is also a chamfer on the "leading" side of the cam to help get the roller onto the cam.-

take great care about this...
Align the splines as described but also when inserting the shaft your should rotate it as you push it in. But you must be sure that the pump cam is in the correct place before pushing it home the last few inches. Do not force it as you may 'nip' the pump and it will stick (learned the hard way).

Having just replied, I have seen another thread in the Vitesse section which deals with the very issue of spline alignment. Suggest you have a read if you've not yet got the two together.
