D versus J overdrive

The D type O/D in my Mk3 has gone the same way as Ians.. that slippy
clutch feeling. I have a J type spare so, question 1. is it just a straight swap?
2. Can the O/D be changed without removing the gearbox?
3. As the O/D is an 'unknown' are there any checks I can do to check
it will work before I fit it? ( the solenoid is working)
4. And anything I have not thought of?
