Is it possible to fit a gearbox from a Spitfire 1500 to a Mk3 GT6? I have been told that it's a stronger box and the ratios are better, plus I happen to
have a Spitfire overdrive gearbox doing nothing.

I have a GT6 with Dolomite 1850 single rail box and J type overdrive. This has the same ratios as the GT6 box.
Problems with the Spitfire box: the ratios are much further apart and you may find 1st is not much use as it is very low. Also, I don't think the input
shaft is the right length (I may be wrong here).
You would need to rebuild the Spitfire box with the GT6 ratios and input shaft in it (or use gears from an 1850 box).
You will need to shorten the prop (1" shorter than standard GT6 OD prop), lower the holes in the gearbox rear mount, drill a hole in the bellhousing to
clear the selector shaft if you use a single rail selector, and modify the tunnel slightly.
I have also heard the single rail box is stronger but not sure whether I believe this as the internals are basically the same and the only major
difference is the selector mechanism.
Hope this inspires you rather than puts you off
