Hi all,
After lifting the engine with gearbox on the rolling chassis, I detected that there are only appr 2 mm clearance between oil sump and the alloy steering
rack mountings. I have already 2 shims between he engine mounting rubber and the engine. Is it normal to have 3 or 4 shims (or even more??). What minimal
clearance is required?
I want to have the engine as low as possible to have enough clearance between engine and bonnet.
Regards
Martin
see you all in Stoneleigh???

martin, sump/rack clearance issues
only enough to make sure they never touch
if it's 2mm and the never touch - they'll never touch. why worry
if there is evidence that they have touched, give it another mm

I would say minimum clearance should be about 5mm. This would allow for flexing in the engine mounts during a rough tickover. You can calculate
(theoretically) the increase in height each 1mm shim will give. If the angle of the engine mount is (say) 45deg. This can be measured with an
adjustable square. then for each 1mm thick shim the increase in height would be 1/sine45deg = 1/0.707 =1.414mm. A different angle will give a different
result. The best way is to stick another 2 shims in and see the difference
